Tour Plan
Your adventure begins at the Nyakalengija trailhead (1615m), where you will meet your guide and porters. After a briefing and registration, start your trek through the lush montane forest. The trail winds through the tropical rainforest, home to a variety of bird species and primates, including black-and-white colobus monkeys and blue monkeys. As you ascend, the vegetation changes to bamboo and heather zones. The trail is relatively steep, and after approximately 5-6 hours of hiking, you will reach Nyabitaba Camp (2651m). Enjoy the scenic views and the tranquil environment as you settle in for the night. Dinner and overnight stay at Nyabitaba Camp.
After an early breakfast, continue your trek from Nyabitaba Camp towards John Matte Camp (3505m). The trail becomes steeper and more challenging as you ascend through the forest. You will cross the Mubuku River and climb through the bamboo zone, which eventually gives way to the moorland zone characterized by giant heathers, lobelias, and groundsel. The hike takes approximately 7-8 hours, and you will be rewarded with stunning views of the Rwenzori Mountains and the surrounding valleys. Upon reaching John Matte Camp, enjoy the alpine scenery and relax after a strenuous day of hiking. Dinner and overnight stay at John Matte Camp.
On the final day, begin your descent from John Matte Camp back to the park gate. Retrace your steps through the moorland, bamboo, and montane forest zones. The descent offers a different perspective of the diverse landscapes and ecosystems. Take time to enjoy the views and capture the memories of your trek. After approximately 6-7 hours of hiking, you will arrive back at the Nyakalengija trailhead. Here, you will be met by your driver for the transfer back to Fort Portal or Kasese, marking the end of your trekking adventure.
